Sydney Cougar Series Highlight 2

Day three of my book highlights today included the last two books in the Sydney Cougar Series, Healing a cougars Heart Seducing a Cougar. I hope you find them tantalizing. ☺

Healing a Cougar's Heart

Knight's don't come dressed in shining armor these days, they come dressed in jeans and a white shirt.

Isabelle O’Connor never considered herself the type of woman who needed a knight in shining armor to come and rescue her, until one does. Well he’s more a knight in blue jeans and white shirt. After all, it is modern times. Unfortunately, her perfect hero has a flaw... he’s a cop.  Isabelle decided years ago never to become involved with a police officer again, and she isn’t going to change her mind now.

Mark Dean loves being a cop. He also loves the hot redhead he rescued from a creep’s unwanted attention at a local nightclub. Mark knows that before he can gain Isabelle’s affection he has to convince her of something. Being a cop has nothing to do with her reluctance to date him. Isabelle’s heart never healed after the death of her husband and Mark makes it his mission to help heal this feisty Cougar’s heart.

Excerpt:

Mark pulled the frightened woman closer to his side. She was shaking like a leaf, and the only words she’d managed to utter since he placed his arms around her were, “Oh God,” which coincided with each time she heard her attacker’s cursing.
“I won’t let him hurt you, beautiful, and neither will that big dude just over there.” Mark pointed to the huge bouncer then glanced down at her. She had the greenest eyes he’d ever seen. “What’s your name, sweetheart?”
Still trembling from the attack, she stumbled on her own name. “Um…it’s Isabelle…Isabelle O’Connor.”
Mark responded with his name and gave her a warm smile to reassure her she was safe. What he really wanted to do was turn around and punch the creep’s lights out.
Bastard!
When the jerk realized he was being evicted from the club, all hell broke loose. He did not intend to go quietly. Mark pushed Isabelle behind him as he called for police backup. As other bouncers moved in, the creep pulled a knife. Mick suddenly went down like a lead balloon, his blood spilling out onto the floor. The club’s manager secured the weapon, but not before his abdomen and arm were sliced. In the midst of the chaos, Isabelle’s body descended to the floor. Assuming she was fainting, Mark rushed to scoop her up and move her away from the scene, only to realize she’d dropped to her knees and was crawling toward Mick. Mark positioned himself between the ongoing fight and Isabelle as she attended to the bouncer’s injuries.
Once the others had the attacker under control, Mark knelt down to see what she needed him to do. “You seem to know what you’re doing.” He helped her roll Mick onto his side, handed over his T-shirt when she requested it, and supported the bouncer’s head with his leg. Bar staff rushed over carrying bundles of towels, unfortunately too late to save his now blood-covered shirt.
“I’m an ER nurse.” That explained her sudden change in demeanor. She’d kicked into work mode. Her expression was calm, her actions confident; she knew exactly what to do, and she did it with efficiency. She was amazing.
Up close, Isabelle was even prettier than he’d first thought. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. Her hair was blood red, and her skin had a smattering of tiny freckles across her chest and arms. He wanted to trace each one and see how far down her body the lucky little speckles went. Her breasts weren’t large, but they’d fit in his mouth perfectly, with only a little overflow to press against the outer edge of his mouth and spill toward his cheeks. Her lips were the prettiest pink− full, luscious− the gloss she wore making them all the more tempting. He had to fight the urge to bend down, kiss her, and nip at her full bottom lip.
She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
He cursed silently. He was rock hard under his jeans—not that it bothered him too much. It might bother Mick though. The bouncer’s head rested on his lap. If Mick turned sideways, he could very well end up with a black eye.

 Seducing a Cougar

When a sexy, young, dominant man decides to seduce you, why resist when you can submit?

Susan Dean didn’t have any idea that taking a job at her brother’s law firm would change her life. Then she met junior partner Blake Daniel’s. They are complete opposites. Blake is young, confident, dominant and determined to claim anything he wants in life. Not that he’d want a woman who turns into a clumsy, nervous wreck that can barely string a sentence together when he’s in the same room as her, or would he?
Blake is a patient man, and it’s a good thing he is because waiting for Susan Dean is driving him to distraction. The attraction between them is obvious. He turns her into a horny mess everytime they’re in the same room, not that Susan appears ready to admit that fact. Once Blake decides it’s time to make a move on his voluptuous co-worker, Susan will have no option but to submit to his seductive demands.

Excerpt:

It didn’t take a genius to ascertain Susan’s attraction to him. Her flushed skin and shallow breaths in response to his touch indicated such. What he didn’t understand was the obvious nervousness toward him. He hoped it would ease over time and put it down to the fact she wasn’t ready to enter into any sort of relationship just yet. After all, the separation from her husband was a fairly recent thing. She’d need time to recover, to sort her feelings out. Blake was prepared to give her that, but he also wanted to leave her in no doubt that when she was ready to move forward he was interested in being the man she moved forward with.
“It’s just over here on the right.” Susan indicated the driveway of her brother, John Dean’s home.
Blake would save the discussion that he was a partner at her brother’s law firm for another time. Tonight was about making an impression she wouldn’t easily forget. As Susan rummaged through her purse, presumably looking for her house keys, he exited the car and walked around to open the passenger door. As he escorted her to the entry of her flat, located at the side of the Dean’s home, he resisted the urge to lower his hand from the small of her back onto her lushly rounded ass. She was definitely a woman who had a bottom designed for spanking and one fleshy enough to mark nicely with a few strikes of his cane.
“Thank you for driving me home.” Susan spoke nervously as she fumbled to get the key into the lock. “I’m fine to take it from here.”
Blake stood close behind her, intentionally crowding her toward the door. He reached his hand over her shoulder and placed it over hers, assisting her trembling hand to successfully slide the key into the lock. He then tightened his grip on her fingers, preventing her from turning the key. She braced her free hand on the frame of the door as he wrapped his arm around her waist and held her firmly against his body.
“Are you sure you wouldn’t like me to tuck you into bed and kiss you goodnight, Susan?” He whispered the words into her ear and felt a shudder run through her body as he exhaled a slow stream of warm breath to caress her neck.
Susan shook her head. “I can’t.”
“I know, I heard you tell Justin at the club. You’re not ready.” Blake ran his hand upward over her midriff before cupping her breast. He felt the tightened bud of her nipple through the fabric, and pressed it into his palm as he gently squeezed her flesh.
Her breathy moan encouraged him, as did her head falling back to rest on his shoulder, and her bottom pressing onto the erection beneath his trousers as she arched against him. He removed his hand from over hers and swiftly positioned it to cup her mound, pressing her skirt between her legs and pulling her harder against the stiffness between his legs. He pinched the peaked nipple beneath her clothing as she began to squirm against the hand between her legs.
“Blake, why are you…” the low moan that rose from within her caused his cock to flinch with demand.  He’d made his point.
He moved both hands to rest firmly on her hips.
“I want you to remember who I am, Susan.” He ensured the tone of his voice was firm because he wanted her to know that he expected her to comply with his demand. “When you’re ready, I expect you to come for me, do you understand?”
“Yes.” Her breathless reply caused him to smile. So did the fact that she stood with her hands still braced against the door.
“That’s my good girl.” The sharp slap he placed on her ass as he prepared to walk away, caused her to squeal and spin around. The arousal in her eyes spoke an undeniable truth. “Yes, you like that don’t you?”
Susan didn’t need to say a word. He could see the answer written all over her horny body and her beautifully blushed face.

Does Size Matter - Romance Heroines

So far in the Does Size Matter series we've looked at the size of the story, the men who appear in them and today I want to discuss the women we read about in romances. Yes, I'm an equal opportunity blog :)

Last week it became clear to me that readers definitely want men that are larger than life, the ultimate rarely attainable man, bigger and better than what we have in our own real lives. This week I'm wondering why it appears to be the opposite scenario for the women we read about. It appears to me, from talking to friends and readers that what we want from our heroines in the books we love is a bit of reality. We don't seem to want to our romance women represented the way a lot of media portrays the feminine form - stick thin insect like creatures. We want curvy, voluptuous, Rubenesque. We want real women and according to Google (yes the authority on everything...lol) the average (real) size for women in the US is a size 12-16. It's much the same here in Australia as well.

So why do we want ourselves in romance novels but not our other halves? Real life women are familiar to us, I don't have any cover model gorgeous friends, but I do have sexy, attractive friends that don't fit the image of what's portrayed in the media as such. I think part of it is being able to relate to the heroine. I know I want to read about someone who may not fit the mold of 'beautiful' but is still seen as being gorgeous in the eyes of the man who loves her. Especially if he's a hunky sex god. But I don't just want my heroine to be curvy or larger bodied, I want her realistic in more ways than that. I want sassy, a woman who can stand up for herself and isn't the typical damsel in distress that need a man to save her. I want a woman who would like a man but knows she'll be okay if she doesn't end up with Mr. Sexy by her side.

Having said all that, as an author, I firmly believe that when it comes to our heroines size doesn't really matter. It's the attitude that counts. Yes, a lot of my heroines have been curvy and voluptuous but I've also written heroines that are thin. Realistic women is what it's about, how the character sees themselves is how I write them. In Healing a Cougar's Heart my heroine, Isabelle, was stick thin. This is how she described herself;
She looked in the mirror. Red hair, long and a bit frizzy when it wasn't wet, framed her face. She was thin, not very buxom at all. She’d always consoled herself that no man needed more than a mouthful when it came to a woman’s breasts. Her legs were her best asset; at least they were long. Not that they went anywhere. She had narrow hips and only the slightest curve to her butt. She looked like a human greyhound, lean and sinewy, built for moving fast.
Healing a Cougar's Heart, Jan Graham, 2012.
Having a stick thin heroine didn't hurt reviews in anyway, RT Book Reviews rated it 4 out of 5 when they reviewed it in October this year and the book sold as well as all the others in the Sydney Cougar series. Does that prove size doesn't matter when it comes to our heroines, I'm not sure.

Most of the romances I read tend to describe the heroine in one on two categories, curvy or thin. So how curvy is too curvy? Would we accept a heroine described as obese, or fat. Instead of curves are rolls acceptable on our heroines body? I haven't written any women described in such a manner but I have read books where women have been overweight or obese. It didn't bother me, they were still great characters, well written, interesting women. And their weight certainly didn't bother the hero of the story. Real women come in all shapes and sizes, I think that's reflected well by most authors when they construct a romance. Unlike our heroes physical type, our heroines vary greatly and I think that's a good thing because women vary greatly in real life and that means your bound to find yourself reflected in a romance book somewhere.

So as readers and authors, what do you think? Does size matter when it comes to the females we read and write about? Is a real woman, attitude and personality wise, more important than how she looks or does every physical type of female need to see herself reflected in the books she reads?

Roses and Chocolates Blog Hop

I loved the idea of being involved with the Roses and Chocolates blog hop because I very fond of both items. My trepidation surfaced when I found out the hop included writing a blog about a memorable time when I was given either chocolates or roses, that's when I came unstuck.

You see, even though I've reached the wonderful age of forty-six, I haven't really been given either item under circumstances that you'd call memorable. Yes, as Linda Ronstadt once sang...poor, poor, pitiful me. I have been given flowers, generally after someone died or as an apology from a lover after a disagreement. As for chocolates I don't generally get those at all. So, what am I doing wrong? Who knows, maybe I need one of the men from my novels, a man who wants to woo me and tell me how special I am with not only his words but gifts and gestures of love, like cooking dinner.

In my most recent novella, Mark, the hero is a gift giver, flowers, perfume etc. In Playing Jax, my second novel due to be released mid May there is actually a discussion about what flowers mean and why men give them to women.

I've decided that since flowers appear as a theme in both my latest works it must be saying something about me. I think I want flowers. I want a man who gives them freely without a hidden agenda or ulterior motive. In my next relationship I will determine to find a man who does just that. Maybe then, if the roses and chocolates blog happens again, I'll have a memorable story to tell.

Enjoy an excerpt from Hearing a Cougar's Heart.

The knock on her door brought her back from her thoughts. Flowers greeted her when she answered the door, in fact, a huge bouquet of the most beautiful flowers she’d ever seen. She eagerly accepted the delivery. No one ever sent her flowers. For a moment she wondered if she should have read the card before the delivery girl left. What if they weren’t meant for her? No, the young woman had asked for Isabelle, so they couldn’t be a mistake.

She got a large vase from the cupboard, filled it with water and−hey presto−a stunning display of color sat in the centre of her dining table. She unpinned the card and sat down on the sofa. Her hands shook as she stared at the little envelope. It definitely said Isabelle O’Connor. She took a fortifying slurp of coffee and then pulled the card from its white wrapping.

Let me show you how an honorable man treats a gorgeous lady. Please come to dinner with me tonight. Mark Dean.

She stared at the card, re-read it, placed it on the coffee table, stared at it some more, and picked it up again. His mobile phone number was printed under his name. Her mind raced to understand what it could mean. Well, apart from the obvious “have dinner with me” bit. Surely he didn’t think she was gorgeous? If anything, that should be a word applied to him, not her. She reached for her phone and began to dial.

Gorgeous. If that’s what he thought of her, it was an added bonus. Dinner with the man who had filled her dreams last night was a definite yes, please.

When the World Tilts on it's Axis

I've had a lack of posts recently, and for a very good reason. My world has tilted on it's axis and I find that most days I'm struggling just to stand upright.

Around 12 weeks ago Shane (the grumpy old man I live with) started complaining about a pain in his back. Like any male he refused to go to the doctor saying it was just a pulled muscle. Eight weeks ago the pain was so excruciating he was taken to hospital by ambulance. That's when the ground under us started to tremble. Ten days later, specialists stood next to Mr Grumpy's hospital bed and announced he had eight weeks to live, give or take a few weeks of course because medicine isn't a perfect science, or so they said. Shane was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma of the right lung.  I didn't need to be told that this was one of the most aggressive kinds of cancer you can get. I already new.

Up until that point I'd never paid much attention to the saying "truth is stranger than fiction" but recently I've learnt that it is. When I wrote my first novel, Finding Angel, one of the characters, Steve Jax, was married. It became clear that he was a good candidate for his own book so, of course, I had to get rid of his wife. Callous...yes. I wanted something that would kill her quickly so I turned to my favourite research tool, google. By the end of the book, Steve's wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness...small cell carcinoma of the lung. Fuck. Who knew?

Mr Grumpy, before he got sick.
When the doctors announced Shane's diagnosis, I felt sick. My research already told me everything I needed to know and doctors confirmed the accuracy of what you can find on the Internet these days. Small cell cancers are the most aggressive and fastest growing kind of cancer you can get. In Shane's case the disease was advanced, but more tests were needed to tell us how advanced, there are treatment options in some cases but there is no cure, the cancer will kill you. Doctors scheduled a PET scan. They told us the scan would show what they call 'hot spots' in Shane's body. Cancer cells in clumps as small as eight to ten cells. He had the test and his body lit up like lights on a friggin' Christmas tree. The lung was the primary sight, other cells of varying size showed up in his lymph nodes, his neck, his liver, and in the bones of his ribs, spine, hips and the large bones of his arms and legs. Treatment options were limited. Doctors offered chemotherapy, a four month intensive treatment that he may or may not survive, that may or may not work to extend his life. As I said, medicine isn't a perfect science and as such outcomes can't be guaranteed.

Shane declined their offer of treatment. His philosophy being, why delay the inevitable. Why indeed? When doctors looked at me and asked what I thought I could only answer one way. It's Shane's life and I support the decision he's made.

So the world continues to tilt. Life confirming it is stranger than fiction every day. Over the last few weeks I've sat at Mr Grumpy's bedside and watched his eighty year old father beg him to have chemo, the answer was still no. I've seen him in such excruciating pain that he changes color like a chameleon as doctors battle to get his pain to a tolerable level, they now seem to have won that battle. I've listened to Shane comfort family and friends, reassuring them about his imminent death, when it should be the other way around. I've born the brunt of his anger when he's told me to fuck off and get out of his hospital room. I've fought with nurses when his pain medication has been overdue (yes, my terms of endearment moments have been many, although I'm sure in the movie Shirley MacLaine had her meltdown far more eloquently than I do). I've watched his chest stay motionless and found myself willing him to please take another breath. And over the last few days I've sat next to his bed and prayed for all this to just end. Selfish...I know...but sometimes when you're on an emotional roller coaster, all you can do is feel whatever's thrown at you, and brace yourself for the next crest of joy or gully of pain.

At least the world isn't completely upside down just yet. Even though Shane and my world may be spiralling out of control, the rest of the world is still normal. Well, as normal as it pretends to be. I'm trying to hold onto what I know will be my reality after Shane's gone. So, in the midst of all the chaos, edits for Playing Jax are done, it's releasing in May (hopefully). Healing a Cougar's Heart went through the edit and release process and came out a few days ago, which was ahead of schedule I think. And despite everything that's going on I've now gone back to working on the next cougar manuscript again, so with any luck I can get it to the publisher on time. Yes, even though truth is stranger than fiction, it's fiction that's currently keeping me sane.

So, as the world continues to tilt all I can do is be there for Mr Grumpy, watch and wait, try to maintain my balance, and hold on so I don't fall over the edge.

Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't. Mark Twain

Post Update:

My Grumpy Old Man, Shane Charles Tollis, passed away at midday on Thursday 4th May. He was 56 years old.

Healing a Cougar's Heart

Purchase Now
Healing a Cougar's Heart will be released on April 27th through Secret Cravings Publishing. I'm so excited about the release of the third novella in the Sydney Cougar Series.
