Hot Seat Welcomes - Diane Demetre

The author hot seat specials are designed to help readers get to know both popular and up and coming authors a little better. The questions are broken into sections - About your writing, about you, fun stuff and finally. Some of the questions are easy, other may need a little more thought and some may cause our author friends to hesitate before answering—still, they all answer.

Today we welcome Erotic romance author, Diane Demetre, to the hot seat. he's telling us about her new book and answering the tricky questions, there's also a fantastic giveaway from her at the end of the post. So let's get started.

Tell us about your latest book. What was your inspiration for writing it, is it part of an ongoing series, the characters, the genre etc?

Dance to a Gypsy Beat is the third book in my erotic romance Dance of Love series. Although all the books in the series are stand-alone titles, there is a familial thread tying them together which adds a deeper dimension to the stories. The books in this series were voted Luminosity Publishing Readers’ Choice for Best Books and Best Covers for 2015 and 2016.

About your writing:

How many books have you written during your career so far and which is your favorite?

I’ve written and had published three erotic romances. My fourth book is romantic suspense which hasn’t been published yet and is probably my favourite to date. I’m hoping to see it out later this year.
Have any of your books received negative reviews and how did you handle the situation?

I had one, but I ignored it. You can always tell whether bad reviews are legitimate or not. If a reader is sincere about their comment, you can see it by the way they write their review. But mostly, negative reviews are from people who admit to not even finishing the book or from people who made the wrong choice in the first place by choosing your book. For example, why would someone choose erotic romance if they get offended by red hot sex scenes?

Do you believe in writer’s block and if so, how do you overcome it?

I haven’t experienced writer’s block, maybe because I write what comes to me rather than thinking what to write. I lean into my inspiration and wait for it to guide me. I think writer’s block is something created from impatience. The key is to trust the muse and follow her lead.

What is the one genre you would never write and why?

Not so much a genre, but I can only write in the ‘light’. I can’t write about dark themes and have turned down publishing offers to write in the ‘dark.’

Have you ever written a book that you’ve regretted publishing and why?

Not yet.

If a reader said they wanted to write a book, what advice would you give them?

Go ahead, but be prepared to sacrifice lots and lots and lots of time.

About you:

Tell us what a typical day in your life is like?

Up early, take the puppies for a walk, meditate, go to the gym, yoga or dance class, do a couple of hours on my other business, then write all afternoon, one hour for dinner, then back in the office to write for a few hours at night.
What sort of things put you in a bad mood?
Being too hard on myself.

Do you have a bucket list and what’s one thing you still want to do that you haven’t done?

Fly into outer space on Virgin Gallatica

What makes you laugh?

Silly things my husband says, loving things my puppies do and the joy of being alive.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

I talked far too long in my wedding speech.

Do you like to read and what are you reading at the moment?

I love reading. At the moment, I’m reading The Road Back by Liz Harris

If you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do instead?

But why couldn’t I write anymore? Unless I’m brain-dead, I can write J

Fun Stuff:

If you could go out with one famous person who would it be and why?

Jesus Christ… I want to hear his story told his way.

Do you have a habit that drives your partner/friends/family nuts and what is it?

Being bossy

In your opinion, what makes a person attractive?

Sense of humour

What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

Raw snails in China… I spat them out once I felt the wiggle

Would you rather have a classic 1969 convertible Mustang or have the use of a beach side condo any time you want?

Beach side condo. I can’t write in the convertible

And finally:

Would you rather survive an apocalyptic event (yes, even a zombie apocalypse) or die instantly without knowing what happened to your family and friends?

Die… because we’ll all be on the other side anyway. Then we get to start all over again J

Author Hot Seat Welcomes J.M. Adele

The author hot seat specials are designed to help readers get to know both popular, and up and coming authors, a little better. The questions are broken into sections - About your writing, about you, fun stuff and finally. Some of the questions are easy, other may need a little more thought and some may cause our author friends to hesitate before answering—still, they all answer.

We haven't had a hot seat guest for a while so I'm really excited to introduce you to J.M. Adele, a wonderful author and brave woman for taking on the Hot seat challenge. As part of her appearance J.M. is giving you all a chance to win a copy of her book, Sensing You. Entry details can be found at the end on this post.
So without further adieu, take it away, J.M.

Getting Started:

Tell us about your latest book. What was your inspiration for writing it, is it part of an ongoing series, the characters, the genre etc?

My latest book, Sensing You, is the first in a three-part series of standalones. I’d describe them as romantic suspense with a paranormal/supernatural flavour, with the heroines in each book having extra abilities.
I guess I have a fascination with all things paranormal after some weird experiences working as a nurse on night duty. Ronnie’s character started to take shape and tell me her story. I had to write this book.

About your writing:

How many books have you written during your career so far and which is your favorite?

I’ve written five so far, but not all are published. I have another five in the works. I have so many ideas it’s hard for me to keep up with them all.
I will always have a soft spot for Remembering Home. It wasn’t supposed to start a series, but the supporting characters kept evolving after I’d finished and I had to tell all their stories, too.

Have any of your books received negative reviews and how did you handle the situation?

No. I’ve had a three-star review (totally respectable in my opinion) where the reviewer brought up some valid points. I know it’s inevitable. If the review is constructive then it’s going to help me grow as an author. I’m okay with that. No one will ever be a harsher critic of my work than I am. If the reviewer just wants to have a go then I’m okay with ignoring it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I don’t have to take all of them on board.

Do you believe in writer’s block and if so, how do you overcome it?

Yeah. Writer’s block happens when I haven’t done enough research, or I’m trying to force the characters in a direction they don’t want to go. Or I’m just so brain fried that I need a break!
Best thing to do is keep working. Just write whatever garbage comes out, and maybe some clarity will ensue.

What is the one genre you would never write and why?

I can’t see myself writing horror. I’d freak myself out!

Have you ever written a book that you’ve regretted publishing and why?

No. Hopefully I never will.

If a reader said they wanted to write a book, what advice would you give them?

Do it. Sit your butt down and write, but read first. Read a lot. Pick apart everything you read. Make notes about what you liked or didn’t like in each story. Notice how the characters were developed and how the story line evolves to build intrigue.
Write and rewrite. Let it rest and then rewrite again. And again. Get an impartial person to read what you’ve written. Read books on the craft. A writer should never stop working on improving their craft.

About you:

Tell us what a typical day in your life is like?

Haha. Typical. Right. I have three boys, two of whom have special needs, so ‘typical’ isn’t so typical in my house.
On a good day I’ll get up early to exercise. It keeps me sane and it’s my ‘me’ time.
Then it’s all about getting the kids off to their therapy and/or school.
When my four - year - old is home I’ll do some chores between keeping him entertained and doing some admin stuff for the business.
On the days that he’s at school I write.
After school I help with homework, get the dinner on, shower the kids and read bedtime stories. The usual.
Then I write until late.
On a bad day it’s all about dealing with difficult behaviours, and physical challenges. Some days everything else goes to crap. I have to adjust depending on the kids.
I make sure I meditate before bed. Seriously. If you haven’t tried meditating you are missing out on some good stuff. That is also my ‘me’ time.

What sort of things put you in a bad mood?

Not getting time to write. I get snappy.
People judging others without ever walking in their shoes.
Injustice.
Petrol price hikes on pay day. WTF!?
Buying something a day before it goes on sale. Also, WTF!?

Do you have a bucket list and what’s one thing you still want to do that you haven’t done?

My bucket list is so long. Travel features repeatedly. I’m determined to tick rock climbing off the list this year.

What makes you laugh?

I have a cheeky sense of humour. Sarcasm and clever observations will get a laugh out of me. Stupid movies. People falling awkwardly (no serious injuries). Cats getting jump scared... There’s a long list.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

Yeah, I’m not sharing that. (Again, there’s a long list to choose from. Awkward is my middle name.)

Do you like to read and what are you reading at the moment?

Hi my name is Jen and I’m a reading addict. I’m currently reading Story Fix by Robert McKee, among others. (Another long list.)

If you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do instead?

Ack! What!?
I’d rock myself in the corner.

Fun Stuff:

If you could go out with one famous person who would it be and why?

We’re not talking date, right?
P!nk. She knows how to have a good time, she’s unapologetic about who she is, but she knows how to poke fun at herself. She stands up for what she believes in and she’s got bucket loads of talent, and tenacity. My kind of person.

Do you have a habit that drives your partner/friends/family nuts and what is it?

Another long list!
I tend to overload myself and then crash. I read too much.

In your opinion, what makes a person attractive?

Intelligence, a sense of humour, and compassion.

What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

Crocodile. Tastes like chicken.

Would you rather have a classic 1969 convertible Mustang or have the use of a beach side condo any time you want?

The condo! Bugger the Mustang. My brothers will gasp if they ever read that.

And finally:

Would you rather survive an apocalyptic event (yes, even a zombie apocalypse) or die instantly without knowing what happened to your family and friends?

Fight to the death! I’d have to survive to take care of my family and friends. I’m still a care giver.

I hope you've enjoyed hearing from J.M. it's been a pleasure featuring her on the blog. Thanks J.M. :)

Excerpt:

She was up. I leaned back a bit so I had a view down the hallway. The bathroom door opened revealing Veronica in a purple tank top and… were those shorts or knickers? Her mass of dark curls moved free and wild. She rubbed her eyes as she walked towards me, heading for the kitchen. Those legs, that hair. Those legs. I was amazed this woman was for real, to be honest.
She dropped her hands as she reached the counter, and squealed when she spotted me watching her.
“Morning, Veronica.” The look on her face was priceless. I let the chuckle escape.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Arms akimbo, stormy eyes, she set my heart on fire. The flame dimmed at the sight of the dark circles under her eyes.
I grinned at her outrage, and moved inside, wanting to get closer and take away whatever troubled her. “Enjoying the morning show.”
She rolled her eyes and opened the fridge to grab the apple juice. I made a mental note to keep the apple juice stocked.
“Hurry up and get your running gear on, we’re leaving in five.”
She paused mid gulp with her cheeks puffed out. The glass clinked on the counter as she set it down, swallowing loudly. “I beg your pardon?”
She was putting on her stern-librarian voice. I bet that worked on most people. She liked to keep everyone at a distance. Not gonna happen with me because it was making me hard. Made me want to rough her up, and show her who was in charge.
“Four minutes.”
Her dark chocolate eyes grew wide as her delectable lips parted. I noted the pulse on her neck as it jumped. She liked it when I took charge. Interesting. A smile tugged at my mouth. “Three minutes. If you don’t change out of those pyjamas, the neighbourhood is going to know what you sleep in.”
She made a strangled sound. “Okay, bossy boots. Sheesh.”
She had to brush past me as she navigated the kitchen counter. I breathed in deeply. Her scent wrapped around my chest, and drew my balls up tight. She made me want. She made me need. She made me forget.
In less than two minutes, she was standing in front of me ready to go, wearing black Skins and a fluorescent yellow, razor-back singlet. Her baseball cap dangled from one hand, and sunglasses from the other. I reached out to take them from her.
“You won’t be needing those. We’ll be back before the sun breaks.”
She held her hands up in dismay. Her phone was strapped to her arm. I ripped off the Velcro, taking that, too.
She put her hand over mine. “No. I need to have music when I run.”
I slowly shook my head. “You need to let your mind wander. Listen to the hum of the morning. Let yourself relax and mull things over. I do my best thinking when I run. Pictures of designs start flicking through my head. It’s liberating. Better than therapy.”
“Everything’s better than therapy.” She bit her lip as she let that slip.
I might’ve found a kindred soul. Her eyes told me she knew pain. The kind that I did. I almost felt like a prick for taking away her safety blanket. Almost.
I placed her things on the kitchen bench. Before I could stop myself, my thumb pressed on her chin to free her lip. “Please stop that, it’s very distracting.”
I heard her soft gasp. Her huge eyes seemed too innocent. It was such a contradiction to the independent, sassy girl I’d come to know.

I let my hand drop and turned towards the door. “Let’s go.” Without waiting for her response, I headed out the front, hoping she’d follow.

Author Hot Seat Welcomes - Janine Ashbless

The author hot seat specials are designed to help readers get to know both popular, and up and coming authors, a little better. The questions are broken into sections - About your writing, about you, fun stuff and finally. Some of the questions are easy, other may need a little more thought and some may cause our author friends to hesitate before answering—still, they all answer.

Today we welcome Janine Ashbless to the hot seat as she talks about her new release, Fierce Enchantments. So let's get started.

Welcome Janine, please tell us about your latest book. What was your inspiration for writing it, is it part of an ongoing series, the characters, the genre etc?

Fierce Enchantments (published by Sweetmeats Press) is my third volume of erotic short stories, following on from Cruel Enchantment (2000) and Dark Enchantment (20009). Ten deliciously dirty yet literate tales, all fantasy of one sort or another - fairy tale, historical, zombie apocalypse, mythological, even SF. Most, but not all, are pretty dark and there are a lot of BDSM elements.

About your writing:

How many books have you written during your career so far and which is your favorite?

I’ve had three volumes of short stories and eight novels out in paperback so far, along with loads of short stories. I love them all – it’s very hard to pick. My latest is always my favorite, which is a healthy way of looking at it, I guess!

Have any of your books received negative reviews and how did you handle the situation?

All books receive negative reviews from someone. I’ve had a few reviews of my erotica saying I’m too filthy and even sick in the head. My response is to laugh and post the worst rants online as badges of honor – it’s way better than being considered bland and just the same as every other writer.

Do you believe in writer’s block and if so, how do you overcome it?

I don’t believe in writers’ block. I believe in writer’s procrastination.

What is the one genre you would never write and why?

Chick-lit. It bores the ever-living crap out of me. But that’s okay – we all like different things and that’s just fine.

Have you ever written a book that you’ve regretted publishing and why?

I sometimes wish The King’s Viper had been longer. I deliberately wrote it as a tight and focused novella … but I think I could have taken it further if I’d put my mind to it, and it has one of my favorite heroes.
.
If a reader said they wanted to write a book, what advice would you give them?

“So what’s stopping you? If you want to write, do it. Don’t waste time asking for advice.”

About you:

Tell us what a typical day in your life is like?

In theory I write full time, working from home. On an ideal day I’ll get up and make a cup of tea, write for a couple of hours in bed, get dressed, walk the dogs, do Facebook/blog/e-mail things, write some more in the evening. How I long for days when that actually happens…

What sort of things put you in a bad mood?

Anything going wrong with my computer will send me into a frothing panic – I feel so out of control when it comes to computers and web stuff. They are some weird form of tech-magick.

Do you have a bucket list and what’s one thing you still want to do that you haven’t done?

I do have a bucket list. I’d love to go to Burning Man!

What makes you laugh?

“Q.I.” Do you get that in the States?

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

I’m not telling you!

Do you like to read and what are you reading at the moment?

I like to read travel books in particular, but don’t have much time to do it.  I’m currently reading “Collapse: how societies choose to fail or survive” by Jared Diamond. It’s brilliant but unnerving.

If you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do instead?

That’s not a question I want to contemplate. One of the things writing does for me is hold off my natural tendency to depression. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t survive without writing.

Fun Stuff:

If you could go out with one famous person who would it be and why?

Gerard Butler, for a torrid one-night-stand. He looks like he could cope.

Do you have a habit that drives your partner/friends/family nuts and what is it?

I don’t dare ask, but …. I can never find my glasses when it’s time to leave the house. That must be pretty aggravating.

In your opinion, what makes a person attractive?

Intelligence. Long hair and a bit of a beard too, if it’s a man.

What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

I’ve been to Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant for lunch, and ALL of the food there was magically strange – I remember the bright green snail porridge. And a cup of tea that was cold on one side of my mouth and hot on the other!

Would you rather have a classic 1969 convertible Mustang or have the use of a beach side condo any time you want?

Oh, the condo, easy. I’ve no interest in cars.

And finally:

Would you rather survive an apocalyptic event (yes, even a zombie apocalypse) or die instantly without knowing what happened to your family and friends?

Wow. Interesting question! My willingness to survival an apocalypse depends entirely on the survival of my loved ones, I believe. I don’t think I’m motivated enough to opt for survival on my own. Yep, I’ll pick a quick death.

Thanks for being here and answering the hot seat questions, Janine. Now let's have a look at Fierce Enchantments.

Blurb for “Fierce Enchantments”

Inside the covers of this, Janine Ashbless’ third collection of erotic short stories, you will find delight and terror and lust - and perhaps even unexpected tenderness.

Excerpt from “Fierce Enchantments”

(from the story A Man’s Best Friend)

“Rest with our ancestors, husband, and be at peace,” she whispered, setting the blue pot among the others. Xhai stood and moved away, giving her space to pray. He looked out across the darkening landscape and the blue gloaming. Early stars were emerging in the west. The evening was still, no breeze stirring the grass. He could feel his heartbeat, thudding in his chest.

When Tsulin had finished, he helped her replace the grave slab. Her face was pale in the shadows, but he had heard no weeping. They walked away a little.

“I didn’t know you’d had children,” he said softly.

She ran her hand across her head. “They were both born too early, and only half-made. One the second year, one the next, and then the soldiers came and took him away for the Emperor, so I never had a chance to give him another.” Her voice sounded hoarse. “I must have spoken to a widow-woman when I was small, my mother says, and been stricken barren. Now I have passed the widow’s curse on, to my children. To my husband, who is dead of it.”

The weight in his chest was jagged now. “No!” he protested. “You did not kill him; war took him. It is an insatiable thing. I have seen a thousand thousand men dead upon the battlefield—do you think your little curse did that?” He wanted to grab her and shake her. He wanted to seize her face and kiss it. “You did not curse him. Liwan spoke of you often, and always with love. He longed to return to you. You were a joy to him.”

Tsulin turned to him in the blue dusk. He could hear her breath, fast and shallow. She laid a hand on his breast and his heart crashed against it. She tangled the fingers of her other hand in the still-damp ends of his long hair. He clasped her around the waist, before he could think about it, and she pressed against him, panting. His blood was roaring in his veins, and he was filled with both delight and the terror of teetering upon the edge of doing her a terrible wrong. The scent of her hair filled his head, driving out thought. Her body was pliant under his hands and he couldn’t tell if he was pushing her away or pulling her to him.

Then she reached down and grabbed his cock through his trousers, and his whole world fell apart. He didn’t need to see clearly to clasp her face and lift it, covering her lips with his kiss. She moaned into his mouth, her open palm writhing across the hardness of his shaft, and he staggered, pushing her back across the grass. Both her hands were suddenly at the drawstring of his trousers, pulling frantically, as he kissed her and kissed her and the breathless dusk whirled around them.

It was only when she bared him that he really believed it. Only then that he knew what he was doing. He laid her down in the long grass and yanked open her jacket to reveal those luscious breasts, soft as peaches. The scent of her skin was intoxicating; the ripe swell of her flesh beneath his mouth and the stiff pucker of her nipples drove him out of his senses. He sucked upon her even as his hands tore at her trousers, jerking them down over narrow hips, pulling off one of her boots and hurling it away in his haste to open her legs.

He found her sex, moist and open and soft. There was no question of finesse. Her hands scrabbled at his cock and balls, pulling him to her, squeezing his shaft like it was a spear and she was ready to kill someone with it. So he stabbed her to the core and felt her gasp and heave beneath him. Her heat was all around him, wet and slippery and exquisite; her legs embraced his hips. For a moment he froze, not daring to move. He felt her arch her spine, and heard her growl as she bit at his jaw.

“Yes!” she gasped.

It was like a fight to the death. Her body heaved beneath his. She was slighter and softer and so much weaker than him, but she refused to go limp. He was thrusting with all his weight, but still she fought him, her body growing more and more rigid as he drove in and out. And he didn’t want to hurt her, didn’t want to defile her, but he couldn’t stop, couldn’t tear himself away from the hunger of her mouth, and the fingernails that bit into his clenching buttocks, and the wet hot incredible need of her sex, the need of her body, the need of her lost days and her stolen love.

Until she start to shake, clamped rigid and locked around him, and she jerked and cried out like something dying, and then for a moment he paused because he thought that somehow he was hurting her, and then he knew he was going to die too; he could feel his death pouring through him like a red tide from his balls all the way up his spine. It was coming, coming, coming—he jerked out of her, desperate to spill on the green grass, but he’d lost control of this long ago and he erupted all over her belly and thighs.

Oh, he thought, as he fell through a star-filled void. I had forgotten what it’s like. How good.
