Resisting Love

Kenzie Stuart is an artist who’s finally started to achieve her dream. She doesn’t need anything to interfere with that, especially a relationship. Her number one rule when it comes to men is, love them and leave them, without getting emotionally involved. This worked perfectly until she met Justin. When Kenzie realized she cared for him, her only option was to leave, but she didn’t merely walk away from the man she loved. Kenzie ran like the wind, determined to never look back.

Justin Davies waited until he thought Kenzie was ready to accept his affection. He believed he did everything required in order to win her heart, but Kenzie still walked out, leaving him to nurse his wounded heart. Despite everything, he wants her back and this time Justin has thrown the rule book out the window. He’ll recapture Kenzie anyway he can. By fair means or foul, he's determined to break down her resistance to love.

Christmas Treat Giveaway Hop #ChristmasTreats

What are our favorite Christmas Treats? Books, of course!
Stop by each blog for a chance to win fabulous books & gifties for the Holidays!

It's nearly that time of year again. The jolly fat man will be here soon, calling everyone Ho, Ho, Ho's and entering houses without chimney's by osmosis. It's also time to give away stuff on the blog as part of the Christmas Treat Giveaway Hop.

More about the giveaway later, or at the end of the blog, actually. :)

So, as part of the hop, we've been asked to talk about the books we'd like to get for Christmas or the series/author who's our favorite treat to read.

For me they are the same thing. I love reading paranormal romance, because I can escape to a world I wish was true. Vampires, Lycan and Shifters, oh my!

My fav authors in the genre are the usual suspects. J.R. Ward and her Black Dagger Brotherhood, Gena Showalter and her Lords of the Underworld, Kresley Cole and her Immortals after Dark and lastly, but in no ways least, Christine Feehan and her Dark (Carpathian) Series.

I still have books to read on both kindle and in paperback from all the above authors. So instead of getting more books for Christmas, I've decided I'd like more TIME (please, Santa) to read the books I have waiting on my list. If I get that, then the only choice I'll have to make will be which one do I start with.

What about you? Would you like more books (and which ones would you like) or more time to read the ones you already have?

Giveaway:

So, here's the giveaway. Sign up to my mailing list (the form is on the top right of the blog page) and go in the draw for a copy of Secret Desire. The first book in my Hot in the City, contemporary romance, series.  If you are already on the mailing list, don't panic,  you're automatically included in the draw. The winner will be drawn Christmas day. Good Luck everyone and don't forget to visit the other blogs for more great prizes.

Hot Seat Welcomes - Sara Brookes

The author hot seat specials are designed to help readers get to know some of todays popular and up and coming authors a little better. The questions are broken into sections - Getting started, about your writing, about you, fun stuff and finally. Some of the questions are easy, other may need a little more thought and some may cause our author friends to hesitate before answering—still, they all answer.

We have a very special hot seat today. Not only is, Sarah Brookes, here answering my questions as part of her blog tour for, Break Me In, but there's also a competition included and a review of her book. I don't normally include reviews but this book tweaked my interest, so I said yes. Both the review and competition details appear at the end of Sarah's interview.  So to begin, let's see what Sarah has to say.

Getting Started:

Tell us about your latest book. What was your inspiration for writing it, is it part of an ongoing series, the characters, the genre etc?

Break Me In is the 3rd book in my contemporary BDSM erotic romance series, Geek Kink. When I first introduced these two characters—Elena and Alex—in the first book of the series, Taking Over Me, I already knew they were going to end up together. However, Alex was obviously in quite a bit of pain so I knew his story was going to a hard and emotional one. I didn’t know just how tough of a time he was having until I started writing Break Me In and discovered his addiction with alcohol.

About your writing:

How many books have you written during your career so far and which is your favorite?

Break Me In is my 21st published book. It’s still a little surreal to me to be able to say that. *g* Each of my books have a special place for me, each for different reasons. Break Me In has been patiently waiting in the wings to be written for quite some time, but the hero, Alex Conners, is not your typical hero because of his addiction, so I wanted to make sure I took the time to give his story justice and gave him the HEA he deserved.

Have any of your books received negative reviews and how did you handle the situation?

Oh, I think at some point they all have gotten a negative review. LOL I don’t think there’s an author out there who hasn’t received some. It’s just a fact of the business. And it’s okay. Not everyone is going to connect with my characters or my writing style and I’m perfectly fine with that.

Do you believe in writer’s block and if so, how do you overcome it?

At one time I did, but that isn’t the case anymore. I tend to leap frog on stories. Which just simple means if I get stuck on one story, I’ll go work on another story. Most of the time, it will be a few weeks or months before I go back to the other story and when I read what I’d written, I can clearly see the problem or have figured out the direction I wanted to go. Getting clarity and stepping away from a book is sometimes necessary to see what is going on.

What is the one genre you would never write and why?

I will never say never about a genre. There are too many ideas floating around in my head to think that way.  What works one day may not work another and I’m not opposed to changing things up once in a while.

Have you ever written a book that you’ve regretted publishing and why?

Nope. I’m one of those who feel I wrote a book for a reason, even if I don’t understand what the reason is. I usually figure it out eventually. LOL

If a reader said they wanted to write a book, what advice would you give them?

Plant your butt in front of a keyboard and get to it. And don’t stop reading just because you’re writing. Always keep reading because, if you think about it, we’re authors because of our love of reading a good story.

About you:

Tell us what a typical day in your life is like?

Total chaos. I have to write around the desk job, carting my teen to dance, a new puppy, two cats, a husband, family commitments, and such. I write on the go a lot.

What sort of things put you in a bad mood?

Ignorance.

Do you have a bucket list and what’s one thing you still want to do that you haven’t done?

I do! And one of those things I’ll never be able to do because the suspension of the Space Shuttle program. Since I was little, I wanted to travel down to be in the Cape Canaveral area to see a shuttle launch and now I won’t get to.

What makes you laugh?

Spending time with family watching a good movie.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

At the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention in 2012, I was introduced to Francine Pascal. She is responsible for the Sweet Valley High series, books I cherished when I started reading them in 5th grade (I still have all my books of the series on my bookshelves). She saw my badge and that I was an author as well. Well…let’s just say that was one interesting conversation when I’m sure my face was several shades of red.

Do you like to read and what are you reading at the moment?

I will read anything with well-crafted characters and an intriguing storyline. I don’t read just romance books, in fact, most of my teen years were spent reading mystery and horror. YA wasn’t a genre when I was a teen! (Yah, I’m old. LOL) Right now I’m reading through some books that I’m judging, which is something I find interesting because it introduces me to authors I may not have previously heard about.

If you couldn’t write anymore, what would you do instead?

When I do have a little free time, I play around with graphic design and website coding. I’d love to have more time to devote to it, but there are only so many hours in a day. So, I would more than likely be doing some kind of website building and such.

Fun Stuff:

If you could go out with one famous person who would it be and why?

Steven Spielberg. Just to pick his brain for some of the things he’s accomplished in his career. And the man wrote The Goonies. How can you not want to meet the creator of the Goonies?

Do you have a habit that drives your partner/friends/family nuts and what is it?

I tend to leave glasses all over the house. Kind of like Bo Hess (Abigail Breslin’s character) from the movie Signs. I don’t do it for the aliens, though. ;^)

In your opinion, what makes a person attractive?

A sense of humor is usually number one on my list. You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself.

What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

I loved ketchup and potato chip sandwiches when I was a kid.

Would you rather have a classic 1969 convertible Mustang or have the use of a beach side condo any time you want?

Ooo, can’t I have the Mustang while using the beach condo? No? Okay. The car. I live near the beach, so that isn’t as appealing to me.

And finally:

Would you rather survive an apocalyptic event (yes, even a zombie apocalypse) or die instantly without knowing what happened to your family and friends?

I would totally want to survive a zombie apocalypse just so I can put all those rules Zombieland taught us to good use and kick some ass! Rule #1: Cardio…

Blurb:

Elena avoids relationships by using her flogger as a shield. Alex is struggling with substance abuse and Elena will do nearly anything to help him conquer his demons, even risk losing him forever. When he comes home, whole and healthy, he raises the stakes by requesting their friendship turn to a D/s bond. His submission will change their dynamic forever. She convinces herself it’s just sex. Love and desire aren’t part of the equation.
Under Elena’s reverent command, Alex finds a comfort he’s always yearned for. He’s happier than ever as he spends his days slinging coffee and his nights bound and collared. Submitting to Elena exposes more than his strengths—it reveals a powerful attraction. Most of all, it uncovers their passionate love. He’s ready to convince her there’s no reason to mask her feelings, but his efforts are derailed when his toxic past resurfaces to annihilate their future.
Warning: A hunky, tortured barista. A seductive, stubborn Domme. Desire that can’t be tamed by cuffs, ropes and chains. And angst. So much drama and angst, John Hughes would be proud. Being bad never felt so good.
Excerpt:
She turned, her breath hitching quietly at the gleam in those liquid crystal eyes as he leaned closer. His hands settled on the roof of her car, effectively caging her in so she couldn’t move. “You want to know just as much as I do. A willing submissive offering himself with no strings attached is hard thing for you to resist.”
“But there are strings.”
“Strings that uncomplicate a hell of a lot of things. They break down a lot of barriers you know you won’t have to deal with. I may be new to this, but I’m not new to you. Your inventive mind is already working over scenarios, dismissing what you think I can’t handle and devising scenes which will break down my walls. It’s written all over your face. This way, we’ll both have our answers.”
His mouth brushed gently against hers, a slow sweep which shook her knees and shattered a few of her defenses. Caught up in the feel of such a loving, gentle touch, she opened to him, drawing his tongue into her mouth as his body pressed tight against hers.
Their last kiss had been filled with a breath-stealing concoction of stale liquor and sweat. Now, the fresh, invigorating scent of his soap and the coffee he’d had with his dinner filled her senses. There wasn’t even a hint of any kind of vice to be had. Not even the faintest wisp of smoke. Just pure, unadulterated male free from sin and debauchery.
Except Alex was sin.

Review by Jan:

As I said earlier, blurb for this book intrigued me, so I agreed to read and review it as part of the promotional tour Sara is doing. Before I get onto the review, let me clarify that the book was given to me by the publisher at no charge, in exchange for an honest review.

For me, the book was a light, enjoyable read. I found the characters, both main and secondary ones, interesting and very likeable. Given it was set over an extended timeframe (a period of a year) the story flowed well. The author does a lovely job of taking us into the main characters past history and the issues they face in relation to making their relationship work, without bogging the story down by to much detail.

Break Me In is the third book in Sara's Geek Kink series, so I was initially concerned that the book wouldn't work as a stand alone read. It does. The inclusion of cameo appearances by characters from the other books and brief indications of how they came together helps to give the reader a fuller picture of the family and friend dynamics from previous books. In fact, their inclusion acted to tweak my interest in going back and reading the first two books of the series.

I found the BDSM to be on the lighter side of things. Bare in mind, what's light to me as a member of the BDSM community, may not be light to a reader who isn't involved in kink. The activities described by the author were fairly well explained, particularly for the uninitiated, and I only had one moment where I thought that the content was inaccurate, giving the reader a false impression of those involved in the lifestyle.

On the whole I liked the book, but there was one thing that annoyed me with this read. Editing errors. I hear you all groaning at the thought. There weren't many, but there were enough to make me mention them. I found some missed words, as well as a couple of 'her' that should have be 'he' type errors. Minor things really. I can understand how they slipped through. There was also an instance where a character's name momentarily changed. These things were disappointing, but I didn't let them deter me from continuing to read. I understand how difficult edits can be, so a few errors don't tend to bother me. However, I know some readers find this sort of thing unacceptable, which is why I mention it.

Because I don't normally do reviews I don't have a rating system to apply, so I'll make one up in line with the theme of this series.

I give, Break Me In, 3.5 geeks out of 5.

If your looking for a light, easy, erotic romance read, with some BDSM thrown in, I think you'll enjoy it.

Sure the local authorities aren’t being straight with her–or anyone else–about what’s been going on in their little upper Michigan town, Dusty delays going off to college for a semester, defying her father and stepmother and taking a job in the local bar to start doing some digging.
Her focus soon fixes on Shane, her brother’s best friend and the town bad boy. The tension and rivalry between Dusty and Shane has always been palpable and sparks fly as the two collide. Dusty finds herself sinking in deeper with Shane and the mystery of what happened to her brother–and a lengthening list of victims–grows even stranger.

EXCERPT: Buried Secrets

“Nick told me something the last time I saw him… alive.”
She closed her eyes, not sure why she was telling him. Maybe it was the way he turned his head toward her before inhaling deeply, like he was trying to breathe her in. Maybe it was the way he cupped her shoulder in his hand, like he was holding something delicate—a tiny field mouse or a baby bird—and he was trying to be careful not to startle it. But mostly she thought it was the memory of his kiss in the darkness, the way he had taken it, how he had groaned and given into her response in that one brief moment before his senses returned.
“What did he tell you?” Shane’s spine straightened slightly, breath catching in his chest. He went completely still, like a deer caught in the shine of a poacher’s flashlight.
“He said he saw the way you look at me.” She hesitated, hearing his intake of breath when her hand moved to his thigh. Leaving it there, halfway up, she rested her head in the crook of his shoulder, feeling him breathing again. “And he saw the way I look at you.”
“What, exactly, is that supposed to mean?”
“Nick said he had the feeling, if he hadn’t been around, we might have ended up together.” Dusty lifted her chin to see his reaction. He didn’t look surprised, not like she had been. They were very close now. Close enough she could see the reddish stubble on his cheeks and the gold flecks in the light blue of his eyes and that little divot above his lip. She had the impulse to touch him there and repressed it.
“You and me?” he asked, pondering it, lips pursed in thought, making her think about that damnable kiss. She didn’t understand why she was feeling this way. First, the funeral home. Now they were both sitting on her brother’s grave. What was it about her dead brother that revved up her libido around Shane? It went beyond crazy and slipped into the realm of the surreal.
“You and me.” She nodded slowly, fascinated by the shape of his mouth.
“I don’t know.” Shane blinked those striking blue eyes at her, both eyebrows raised. Her attention was drawn down to his mouth again when he licked his lips, drawing the lower one thoughtfully in before asking, “What do you think?”
“I don’t understand why…” She didn’t. She didn’t understand any of it. Her world made no sense anymore. Nick was dead and Shane was here, offering her comfort and something else—she didn’t even know what—after all the years they’d spent sparring and going after each other’s throats.
But he’d come looking for her, had known she would be in the closet. He’d known her temper well enough to hold her back when she would have gone after the idiotic sheriff with her bare hands. And he’d held her and rocked her and let her cry when she needed to, which was far more than anyone else in her life seemed to want to do.
She didn’t understand it, but she knew she was feeling it. And whatever “it” was, it was powerful. Magnetic. It made her want to act, to do something reckless, careless, shameless. It made her feel like she had in the closet of the funeral home, ready to strip down to nothing and give into the feeling. It made her feel like doing that now, right here, on her brother’s grave. It felt wrong and right at the same time.
“What don’t you understand?” he prompted.
Dusty took a deep breath, reaching out and doing it, touching that little divot above his parted lips. She didn’t stop there, tracing the delicious shape of them, feeling him go still again, but it was different this time. This sort of stillness was more predator than prey. It was like the watchful, waiting crouch of an animal.
“I don’t understand why,” she whispered, swallowing as she let her finger trail down over his Adam’s apple, feeling him swallow. “But I think Nick wanted us to kiss and make up.”
“Do you want to?” He turned more fully toward her, the question in his eyes.
“Kiss?” Her finger traced the V of his t-shirt, his jacket still undone.
“Yes.”
His lips were slightly parted, wet. So were hers. They were so close she’d lost focus and longed to close her eyes. Her body thrummed, so very alive, and the irony didn’t escape her because they were surrounded by death. Everything else faded away, lost its shape, until all she could focus on was Shane’s presence, the heat of his body, the way his hands moved down the curve of her shoulders to grip her upper arms.
“I don’t know why,” she confessed, finally letting her eyes close in anticipation, feeling him drawing her closer by micro increments. “But yes. Yes. Yes.”
She whispered the last three words, her lips almost touching his. His breath was warm, fruity and sweet, fingers tightening their grip on her arms.

About the Author
Emme Rollins is Top 100 Amazon Bestselling New Adult/Mature Young Adult fiction. She’s been writing since she could hold a crayon and still chews her pen caps to a mangled plastic mess. She did not, however, eat paste as a kid.

She has two degrees, a bachelor’s and a master’s, one of which she’s still paying for, but neither of which she uses out in the “real world,” because when she isn’t writing, she spends her time growing an organic garden to feed her husband and children (and far too many rabbits and deer!) where they live on twenty gorgeous forested acres in rural Michigan.

She loves tending her beehives (bees are wonderful pollinators and Hello!? Honey!) and keeping up with her daily yoga practice and going for long walks in the woods with her boxer, Rodeo, who loves chasing squirrels almost as much as Emme loves writing!

Author Hot Seat Welcomes Susan Hayes

The author hot seat specials are designed to help readers get to know some of today’s popular and up and coming authors a little better. The questions are broken into four sections - About your writing, about you, fun stuff and finally. Some of the questions are easy, other may need a little more thought and some may cause our author friends to hesitate before answering. Still, they all answer.

Today we welcome Susan Hayes to the Hot Seat, her current release is Guarding Valentina out through Siren Publishing. Let's see how Susan answered our tricky questions and then after the interview why not take a sneak peak at Guarding Valentina and see how you can win a copy for yourself.

About your writing:

How did you get started as a writer?

I've always loved to write, but I didn't get serious about actually writing things for other people to actually read until I lost my little brother suddenly. His death made me realize we’re only here for a little while, so if this was something I wanted to do, I had better get on with it!

Why do you write?

I write because I love to create my own worlds and tell the stories of the characters who live there. And quite honestly I write because my muse gets incredibly cranky if I don’t. I stopped for a few years when things were tough in my life, and I realized later that not writing actually made things worse. It’s just part of who I am.

Have you ever had a day you wanted to quit and never write again?

There are days I wanted to toss my computer out the window or set fire to a manuscript that wasn't working, but I have never considered stopping writing forever. I couldn't do it.

Do you feel lucky to be doing what you are doing?

I feel absolutely blessed. Siren Publishing accepted a manuscript that had already seen several rejections and gave me the opportunity to develop a reader base and hone my craft. I will always be grateful to both my publisher and my readers for their support.

Tell me how you got to where you are today?

I actually started out writing comedy articles for some internet-based humor sites. One of them has an open door policy for submissions, and once I learned enough to get my first article published, I was hooked. After two years of freelance writing I decided to try my hand at longer works and switched to fiction, specifically erotic romances because that’s what I enjoy reading.

How do your family/spouses react to your work as an author? Do they know what you write?

I’m single, and I have learned the hard way that telling a prospective date what I write is a tricky thing. I usually don’t mention it until I am sure there’s not going to be an adverse reaction, or worse, an assumption that I have done/tried/lived the lives of my heroines! (If I did, I certainly wouldn't be single.) My parents are very proud of me, and my mum has no trouble telling people I write smut. (Her word)  My dad knows what I write, but for his own sake my mum banned him from every actually reading it.

About you:
What are you passionate about in life?

My friends, my writing, and chocolate ice cream.

If you had to give a thank-you speech at the Oscars, who would you thank and what would you say?

I’d have to start by thanking my parents for teaching me that anything is achievable if you work hard enough at it, and for loving me even when they were quite sure I’d lost my mind. My best friend would get a big thank you too, for not only being the one who taught me to write erotic romances, but for being my sounding board, my cheerleader, and putting up with me talking about the characters in my head instead of reality some days.

What are the three most important life lessons you've learned that might make life easier for others?

Don’t let negative or needy people steal your energy or your dreams. If they aren't encouraging you to go forward, then they are holding you back. Let them go.

Life’s shorter than we think it is and sometimes tomorrow never comes. If there’s something you really want to do before you die, find a way to make it happen now. You can always come up with a new goal after this one is met.

The voices in your head, the ones that whisper you can’t do something because you’re not good enough, or strong enough, or pretty enough? They’re always wrong.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional. Whom would it be and why?

I’d want to spend a week as one of my heroines, so that just once I could experience what it feels like to live in a world where no one leaves the toilet seat up, there are no fights over whose turn it is to do the dishes, and nobody snores.

What's the worst thing you did as a kid?

My dad is over six feet tall and was a cop for 30 years. I had too much self-preservation to get into much trouble!  I did get into a Roman candle battle with a group of friends one Halloween…and we managed to set a neighbour’s field on fire. Oops.

What do you do to have fun?

Rock Band night with friends ranks high on the “fun” list. I do a wicked Bon Jovi impression.

Share a funny incident in your life.

Several careers ago I worked in the tourist industry, selling souvenirs to guests at a local seaquarium. It was a regular occurrence to be approached by a panicky non-local who would flap and gesture while breathlessly explaining that our seals had “escaped.” I would have to calm down the patron and reassure them that those were wild seals. And then, invariably they would argue with me. “No no, they can’t be!”  Already knowing the answer, I’d ask how they could be sure. “My child waved at them coming down the ramp, and the seals waved back!”

And that is why the aquarium trainers were all given corporate memos instructing them to stop teaching the wild seals that inhabited the marina to wave in exchange for fish treats.

Fun Stuff:

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you?

I’m pretty sure Hollywood actresses don’t come in my height/weight ratio… but Charisma Carpenter would get my vote. Why? Because she was in Buffy!

If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be?

Hagen Daz ice cream, Mayan chocolate flavor.  Smooth, tasty and with just a hint of heat.

What is your favorite color- food- song- movie?

Color: Purple.   Song:  The Rose   Movie: The Princess Bride

What's the funniest pick up line ever used on you?

“What is a cute little heifer like you doin’ in a cow shed like this.”  Used by a Texan hottie, in a bar in Australia. I’m sure it worked better on the natives…I just couldn’t stop laughing.

What's the one thing you can't live without?

Laughter. What would life be without it?

And finally:

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night, it's raining heavily, when suddenly you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for a bus:
-An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
-An old friend who once saved your life.
-The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
You can only fit one person in your car, who would you choose to offer a ride to?

The old lady.  My friend will understand because they are my friend, and if that is truly my perfect partner, he’ll ask for my number while he’s helping me get the old lady into my car.

Guarding Valentina:

Sometimes everything has to go wrong so fate can make it right.
Valentina Farro is used to being the hunter, not the hunted, but when a vampire marks her for death, everything changes. Now one of Paladin’s fiercest warriors is fighting for her life and the lives of her Paladin family.

It should have just been another assignment, but nothing goes according to plan when the vampire Aedan Doyle is hunting leads him around the world and into Valentina’s life. Determined to keep Val safe from the vampire’s vengeance, Aedan appoints himself as Val’s personal bodyguard. Then he makes sure he’s guarding her beautiful body up close and personal, every chance he gets.

As the body count rises, Valentina and Aedan’s new bond is tested to the breaking point. Trusting each other with their lives is one thing, but can two solitary warriors find the courage to trust each other with their hearts?

Excerpt:

“You’re going to need to put some pressure on that.” Another voice came out of the darkness, and Val acted out of instinct, her gun trained on the new arrival before she remembered she was in the middle of Seattle and not some godforsaken warzone.

“How the hell is everyone managing to sneak up on me tonight?” she muttered in frustration as she got to her feet, still feeling slightly unsteady but determined not to show it.

“You can put the gun down, luv. I’m one of the good guys.” The stranger’s voice was gentle, and there was an almost musical lilt to his words as he held his hands up, showing he was unarmed.

“Forgive me if I don’t take your word on that.”

He reached up slowly and swept a sodden tumble of auburn curls out of his eyes so she could see his face. “Those holes in your neck are going to keep bleeding unless I treat them. It’s a charming little trick they have, something in the saliva that stops the blood from clotting properly.” He took a step forward. “My name is Aedan, and I’m sorry I didn’t get here in time to save your friend. You must be a member of the Paladin Protection Agency.”

Val lowered the gun, though she didn’t take her finger off the trigger. “Did Remington take out a front page ad or something? How is it everyone I’ve met tonight knows who I am and who I work for?” She raised her free hand and clamped it down on the wound on her neck, hissing slightly in pain as she pressed hard to slow the bleeding.

“Your organization seems to have run afoul of a very nasty vampire, luv.”

“Stop calling me that,” Val snapped.

Aedan grinned and took another step toward her. “I’d use your name, but first you need to tell me what it is.”

“It’s Val,” she offered and lowered her gun the rest of the way. “And I’ve decided I’m going to trust you, for now.” As he moved close enough that she could see him properly, Val realized he was probably used to being trusted on sight. Or being flirted with on sight, she mentally added as she took in his appearance. His eyes were hazel, and even in the dim light of the street she could make out the smattering of freckles that dusted his chiseled features. Even soaking wet and half in shadow, the man was definitely easy on the eyes.

“I’m pleased to meet you, Val. Though I will admit I wish it were under more cheerful circumstances.” Aedan reached into his pocket, and Val lifted the gun slightly in warning. “Easy now, I’ve got something that’ll help with the bleeding. No need to shoot the man offering to help.” He dug deeper and withdrew what looked like a small, plastic squeeze bottle full of water.

“What is it?” She eyed the bottle with distrust. The wound on her neck hurt like hell, and the bleeding hadn’t stopped yet, but she’d rather deal with the discomfort than let a stranger dose her with god knew what. “And for that matter, how do you know about Paladin? Or vampires?”

Aedan chuckled. “Is this what you call trusting someone? I’d hate to see how you react to someone you don’t trust if this is the warm and fuzzy version.” He tipped the bottle over and squeezed a bit of the liquid onto his hand, where it blended with the rain. “It’s holy water, that’s all. It’ll help. And as for how I know about Christoph and his kind, I’m a hunter.”

“Oh, that clears it up nicely,” Val shot back and arched a brow at him in irritation. “What the hell do you hunt? Deer? Criminals? Unicorns?”

“Vampires, actually,” Aedan answered in a matter-of-fact tone as he nodded toward her injury. “Will you permit me to fix that for you, or are you going to just keep bleeding until your friends arrive?”

It was at times like these Val envied her teammate Tara her empathic abilities. It would have made it so much easier to know if she could trust this charming man, or if she was about to fall victim to her infamously bad sense of character judgment yet again.

“Go ahead.” She lifted her fingers away and frowned when she saw that she was still bleeding heavily. “And uh, thanks.”

“This might sting a bit,” he warned her.

“It’s only water. How much could it—yeow!” She yelped in surprise at the burning sensation that flared up and then faded as quickly as it had come. “I thought you said that was just water?”

“Holy water. Father Patrick’s special blend, in point of fact. It has the power to purify that which has been tainted by the undead.”

“So that hurt because your friend Christoph left me with a neck full of vamp venom?”

“Something like that, yes. But let’s be clear here, Christoph is no friend of mine. He’s more like my current assignment. Forgive me for saying so, but you don’t seem too well informed for a group that managed to kill off an entire nest of Christoph’s fledglings. I’m going to guess you’re new to this sort of thing.”

Before she could answer him, several sets of headlights appeared on the road, heading toward them at high speed.

“It would appear your friends have arrived.”

Before she could say a word, he brushed a quick kiss to her lips, and then his voice whispered in her ear, “I’ll see you again soon, luv.” Then he was gone. Between one heartbeat and the next, he vanished. Her lips still tingled from the kiss he’d given her before he had disappeared, the only proof he’d ever been there at all.
